A gate in the Hutong district, showing superstitions of ancient China.
The four blue posts above the door (always an even number) indicate a very wealthy family.
The roof tile is grey for good luck.
The little green squares on the middle layer of roof are for longevity.
The little blue squares on the bottom layer of the roof are for health.
The "eyebrows" above the gate have two purposes: for beauty (like human eyebrows) and to keep evil spirits out by making the gate appear to be a face. An evil spirit would have to enter as an animal and could not perform magical wrongdoing.
There are 3 steps (always an odd number) to show the family's status above the common street.
The threshold is to keep out ghosts. Ghosts can walk but not jump.
